a. Develop models to identify the parts of a plant—root, stem, leaf, and flower. b. Ask questions to compare and contrast the basic needs of plants (air, water, light, and nutrients) and animals (air, water, food, and shelter). c. Design a solution to ensure that a plant or animal has all of its needs met. |
Driving Question: How can we, as zoologist, design a habitat that meets the needs of plants and animals?
Project Summary: Zoo Atlanta is building another zoo in our area and they need to know how to best create habitats for all of their animals. Students will explore habitats of plants and animals and how their ecosystems are affected. They will use this information to communicate to others what plants and animals need in different habitats to survive. Based on their research of the plants and animals students will also create murals to teach others about the different types of habitats where plants and animals thrive. They will record ChatterpicKid video about the animal they researched. The videos will be linked to QR Codes and posted on the murals to create an interactive habitats.
Entry Event - Mrs. Marshall, from Zoo Atlanta spoke with the 1st graders about animal characteristics and habitats. She even brought some artifacts to share with students.
Students took a Virtual Field Trip to explore habitats where different animals and plants live. They answered questions about the animals and got to check out a 3D shark too!
Plant and Animal Research Journals - Student observed several experiments to learn about plants and recorded their observations in their journals. They also used the journals to record what they learned about animal needs.
Students observed experiments to see how leaves, stems, and roots work and learn what they do.

Animal Research
Student used Pebble Go (www.pebblego.com) and books to research an animal. Then they worked in groups to create habitats in order to ensure that the animals would have all of their needs met. The habitat also included plants that would live there.
