Focus Standards
SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Carter (leadership and human rights). b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms). SS2CG3 The student will give examples of how the historical figures under study demonstrate the positive citizenship traits of honesty, dependability, liberty, trustworthiness, honor, civility, good sportsmanship, patience, and compassion. |
Project Summary: Students learn about the founding heroes of Georgia through guest speakers, research and in-school field trips. Through independent and shared activities, students will learn about the character traits that Georgia Heroes displayed in the process of the founding of Georgia. They will examine the reason for laws and a plan for a new community. Then, they will use what they learned to plan and design their own a community.

Inquiry
Students read about historical figures in Georgia history in order describe their lives and contribution. They compared the lives of the Georgia Heroes to their own lives. Students also used what they learned to give examples of positive character traits demonstrated by the heroes below.
Georgia's Heroes contributed to the founding of Georgia. 2nd Graders planned their own community based on those same ideas! Along with the map of their community, students also had to decide at least three laws for their new community and an explanation for each.
