Standards:
SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Carter (leadership and human rights). b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms). SS2CG3 The student will give examples of how the historical figures under study demonstrate the positive citizenship traits of honesty, dependability, liberty, trustworthiness, honor, civility, good sportsmanship, patience, and compassion. ELAGSE2W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. ELAGSE2W7: Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations). ELAGSE2RI1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. ELAGSE2SL4: Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences. |
Georgia's Superheroes
Driving Question: How do we tell the story of Georgia’s past heroes? Project Summary: Students learn about the founding heroes of Georgia through guest speakers, research and in-school field trips. Through independent and shared activities, students will produce a book highlighting the characteristics and contributions of each Georgia hero. Project Launch/Entry Event: A skit will introduce and tell the story of James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, and Tomochichi and how they came together in the beginning of Georgia. |
