Kindergarten: Secret Agent Rock Mission
Focus Standards: SKE2
Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe the physical attributes of earth materials (soil, rocks, water, and air). a. Ask questions to identify and describe earth materials—soil, rocks, water, and air. b. Construct an argument supported by evidence for how rocks can be grouped by physical attributes (size, weight, texture, color). c. Use tools to observe and record physical attributes of soil such as texture and color. |
Driving Question: How can I use my five senses as a detective to find missing rocks?
Project Summary: After a study of rocks, minerals, and soil, students will attend the “Diamond Dell” in school field trip. Students will use rock collections to create rock investigations (clues) for partners. As “secret agents” they will examine clues, use magnifying glasses, and five senses to identify and sort rocks.

Using our five senses, we explored the properties of rocks in small groups. Then, we graphed what we learned about rocks.
We graphed physical attributes of rocks.
We compared several kinds of soil and then wrote about how soils were different or alike. Many small rocks were found in some soils, and it was surprising to see bots of leaves and twigs in other soils.
