2nd Grade - What's the Matter?
Driving Questions: How can we, as scientists, explain how matter changes when preparing food?
Focus Standards:
S2P1. Students will investigate the properties of matter and changes that occur in objects. a. Identify the three common states of matter as solid, liquid, or gas. b. Investigate changes in objects by tearing, dissolving, melting, squeezing, etc. Project Summary: Students will investigate physical properties of matter and changes in states of matter. Through independent and shared activities, students will explore changes such as liquid to gas, solid to liquid, gas to liquid, liquid/solids to new solid, liquid to solid, and other changes. Using their knowledge from their investigations, students will choose a way to demonstrate how matter changes when preparing food. |

Students modeled the difference in particles of solids, liquids, and gases using Cheerios.

Using the Chatterpix app, students made an object come to life to tell about states of matter (click on the photo so see an example).

LAB REPORTS
|
Students could make choices to show what they learned in a variety of ways during station rotations.
|
Students did many science experiments to explore matter. As part of their Lucy Calkins writing units, they wrote Lab Reports to go along with the experiments.

Final Products
Students created final products showing the use of the three states of matter in making a meal.
