What's the Matter?
Driving Questions: How are the states of matter useful?
How can I demonstrate changing matter? Focus Standards:
S2P1. Students will investigate the properties of matter and changes that occur in objects. a. Identify the three common states of matter as solid, liquid, or gas. b. Investigate changes in objects by tearing, dissolving, melting, squeezing, etc. |
Project Summary: Students will investigate physical properties of matter and changes in states of matter. Through independent and shared activities, students will explore changes such as liquid to gas, solid to liquid, gas to liquid, liquid/solids to new solid, liquid to solid, and other changes. Students will choose a final product format and the type of matter with which to explain the change as well using inquiry skills to share why the property is useful in their own lives. |

Inquiry -
High Touch High Tech "Gas Blast" Students discovered what "matters" in the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases by experimenting with Helium balloons and ooze tubes. They measured the mass of different objects using balance scales. They also got to make paper helicopters and explore with a Gas Blaster!

Write Like a Scientists - Students wrote lab reports with their science experiments as part of the Lucy Calkins Unit 2 writing. They even created digital lab reports with the SeeSaw APP. After testing the hypothesis, students used the voice recorder to tell the results of the experiment.
